Winning the Business Day/BASA Award for International Sponsorship

Standard Bank won the 2009 Business Day/BASA Award for International Sponsorship for the exhibition, Marlene Dumas: Intimate Relations.

This makes it four Business Day/BASA awards in a row for Standard Bank, having also secured awards for the Chagall exhibition in 2001, the Miro exhibition in 2003 and Picasso and Africa in 2006.

All four of these exhibitions, which were highly acclaimed by both the press and the public and drew record numbers of visitors to the Standard Bank Gallery, affirm Standard Bank's identity as a leading patron and sponsor of the arts and its commitment to making meaningful connections with local and international art communities.

The International Sponsorship category recognises those businesses sponsoring South African arts abroad, or which bring an international arts project into South Africa, giving public access to work otherwise not seen.

This year the finalists in this category were Standard Bank for Marlene Dumas: Intimate Relations and Zamexpo for artSpace, Durban.

The awards were announced at an event held in the Forum, Turbine Hall on 31 August 2009 addressed by Minister of Arts and Culture, Lulu Xingwana and celebrated poet, writer and performer Gcina Mhlope.
