Standard Bank has expanded its sponsorship of football, crucially deepening its involvement to reflect the bank's rapidly changing and expanding markets, both in South Africa and on the continent.

In addition to remaining the banking partner to South Africa's premier football clubs Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Standard Bank has also recommitted its support to Pan African football with the recent signing of an eight year deal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

While the FIFA 2010 World Cup is a critical goal for all South Africans and others on the African continent, Standard Bank's investment in Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates looks to build football in South Africa beyond 2010, whilst its commitment to CAF is a long-term investment in the game across the continent until 2016.

Banking partnership with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

Standard Bank is the banking partner to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, South Africa's premier football clubs.

Whilst the provision of financial services is key to the relationship with the two clubs, the investment as the official banking partner affords Standard Bank a much wider business and marketing platform to reach fans and specifically the clubs' supporters. Football is an opportunity to develop and deepen partnerships with the Amakhosi and the Bucs - and their supporters, making our brand relevant to fans locally, and helping to build and strengthen relationships with our customers.

The alignment of Standard Bank with these clubs is key to the long-term success of domestic football in South Africa. Whilst the 2010 World Cup is a critical goal for Standard Bank, as it is for all South Africans and others on the African continent, our sponsorship of Chiefs and Pirates is a long-term commitment to building local football beyond 2010.

Pan-African Football

Let's be the bank that brings you football that unites African nations.

Standard Bank has recommitted its support to Pan African football by signing an eight year deal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In the new commercial agreement with CAF, Standard Bank has secured sponsorship rights - as the official financial services sponsor - to the following events or tournaments:
  • Orange Africa Cup of Nations - biannually: 2010 (Angola), 2012, 2014, 2016
  • African Nations Championship (CHAN) - 2009, 2011
  • Orange African Youth Championship (Under20) - biannually: 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015
  • Orange CAF Confederations Cup - annually: 2009 to 2016
  • Orange CAF Champions League - annually: 2009 to 2016
After successfully partnering the CAF Champions League and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ghana in 2008, the new sponsorship agreement emphasizes Standard Bank's commitment to African football over the long term.

Standard Bank will be the only African corporate sponsor to the Orange Africa Cup of Nations ANGOLA 2010, Africa's premier football tournament.

The decision to partner with CAF over an eight year period was driven by Standard Bank's growing presence as a leading emerging markets bank on the African continent, and at the same time an appropriate key sponsorship as the bank has the largest banking presence in Africa.

As CAF showcases Africa's accomplishments through tournaments that attract continental and global audiences, Standard Bank is able to make meaningful connections with the communities in which we operate. The engagement through the various CAF events and tournament are the means through which Standard Bank plans to build and expand its brand awareness and positioning in Africa in the 17 countries in which we operate.

The sponsorship has different goals in each of the different countries it will reach, and the bank aims to use this footprint to build and entrench relationships, while extending networking and hospitality opportunities further into the continent.
