Alewyn Burger joins Standard Bank

Former Absa IT executive director Dr Alewyn Burger will be joining Standard Bank on March 1 as Director Direct Banking and Strategic Payments.

Says Peter-Wharton Hood, Standard Bank Technology and E-Commerce Director: "We are delighted to have a man of Alewyn’s considerable banking experience and foresight join our team."

Burger will be responsible for consolidating and co-ordinating Standard Bank’s direct banking initiative, which includes ATMs and telephone banking. In addition, he will take charge of the bank’s smart card venture as well as strategic technology, research and development.

Burger, who has a doctorate in mathematical statistics, is also an Extraordinary Professor of Informatics at the University of Pretoria and a visiting professor at the Stellenbosch Graduate School of Business

After completing his academic studies, he taught statistics to graduate and post-graduate students at both RAU and the Wits Graduate School of Business. His banking career began in 1979 at the United Building Society as a statistician and operations researcher.

Following the ABSA merger in 1993, he was appointed Group Executive for ABSA Management Services, Technology & Marketing and, at the same time, Executive Director of ABSA Bank. On 1 May 1995 Burger was appointed Group Executive Director for ABSA and a member of ABSA's Group Executive Committee.

Burger played a major role in the ABSA merger, initially as the business project manager that integrated Bankorp with ABSA, and subsequently as the project manager and sponsoring executive of the massive Information technology project that merged the four ABSA IT systems into a single integrated operation.

He left Absa in December 1998 and joined the private investment company, Frankin (Pty) Ltd.

He has been an active participant in the electronic commerce market and the bank utility companies, being at various times chairman of Transwitch Services, Destiny Electronic Commerce and BDB Data Bureau and director of Bankserve, ACB, Saswitch, SBV, Unexcor and JBCB.

Burger is married with three children. He enjoys tennis, squash and reading.
