Standard Bank and the UCB honour top cricketers
Standard Bank and the United Cricket Board of South Africa have introduced a new award programme to commemorate milestones reached in international limited overs cricket. The bank and the UCB will present awards to 11 national squad members, including management.
Milestones are grouped in four categories, with different awards for each category.
Category A: Squad members are awarded for participating in 100 matches, scoring 3 000 runs, taking 100 wickets, 100 dismissals or 50 catches
Category B: 200 matches, 5 000 runs, 200 wickets, 150 dismissals or 75 catches.
Category C: 300 matches, 7 000 runs, 300 wickets, 200 dismissals or 100 catches.
Category D: 400 matches, 9 000 runs, 400 wickets, 250 dismissals or 125 catches.
Category A winners will receive a Krugerrand for each milestone achieved. The following players will be honoured for these milestones:
Shaun Pollock: playing 100 matches (125)
taking 100 wickets (183)
Shaun is 17 wickets away from the next milestone of 200 wickets.
Jacques Kallis: 100 matches (120)
100 wickets (107)
3000 runs (4 081)
Lance Klusener: 100 matches (109)
100 wickets (134)
Daryll Cullinan: 100 matches (138)
3 000 runs (3 860)
50 catches (62)
Mark Boucher: 100 dismissals (122)
Gary Kirsten: 100 matches (148)
Jonty Rhodes: 3 000 runs (4 492)
100 matches (193)
Jonty is seven matches away from the next milestone of 200 matches.
Allan Donald: 100 matches (131)
Goolam Rajah: 100 matches (177)
The category B winners, who will receive limited edition Millennium Krugerrand sets, are:
Gary Kirsten: 5 000 runs (5 511)
Jonty Rhodes: 75 catches (87)
Allan Donald: 200 wickets (217)
Craig Smith: 175 matches (222)
Two South African cricketers also set new world records for the quickest run and wicket combinations. Lance Klusener’s 2 000 runs and 100 wickets combination was achieved in a record 78 one-day international matches. This betters Kapil Dev’s previous record of 100 matches. Lance reached the magic double against India in Nagpur in 2000.
Jacques Kallis’s 4 000 runs and 100 wickets in international limited overs cricket was accomplished in 113 matches. His new record beats Chris Cairns’ 130 matches and was reached against Sri Lanka in Cape Town this year.
