Aids orphans

The Standard Bank is aware of the sad plight of destitute Aids orphans whose late father's Daveyton house is bonded to the bank.

The bank, realising the family's difficulties, has treated them with extreme sensitivity over a period of more than three years, during which time the father lost his job and the parents took ill. The father died in July this year and the law requires his estate to be wound up: assets and liabilities must be reconciled and settled. To this end a trustee must be appointed. In the process of winding up, the children's interests will be under the custodianship of the trustee and the bank has therefore not obtained an eviction order.

The Standard Bank is also sensitive to the broader issue of Aids in society and has donated more than R500 000 so far this year to Aids care centres and Aids awareness education.

Banks and the business sector can not alone solve the problem of the Aids pandemic and its effects. Stronger public-private partnerships are needed. The Standard Bank would strongly support relevant initiatives.
