While in the United Kingdom, he accepted a position with Rothschild Investment Bank in London for six months as part of its telecommunications and Internet sector team. He left the bank in 2000 to continue his studies full time, reading economics and development at the University of London.

In 1993, Patel became special advisor to the Secretary-General of the ANC. He was appointed chairperson of the National Taxi Task Team in 1995 with responsibility to end the taxi violence and to create a regulatory framework for the taxi industry.
Patel was appointed Chief Director: Management Services at the Department of Transport in 1994 and in 1998, he was promoted to Deputy Director-General. He was appointed Director-General in 1998.
Jacko Maree, Standard Bank Chief Executive, said he was delighted Patel had joined the bank. “Dipak’s broad expertise gained over a wide range of endeavours will certainly be most valuable to the Standard Bank. It is pleasing that we continue to attract executives of his calibre.”
