Markinor-Sunday Times Top Brands Survey 2002

Standard Bank was rated the clear leader in the bank's category of this year's Markinor survey on brands in South Africa.

Nationwide, 3 496 people were asked in March/April to rate banks in three attributes making up a weighted brand relationship score: awareness, trust/confidence and loyalty/commitment. We were rated highest in all three categories and highest overall. First National Bank (FNB) and Absa were joint second with Nedbank fourth.

The overall brand relationship score achieved by Standard Bank was the second highest overall of all brands mentioned in 17 categories; beaten only by Coca-Cola, the world's most valuable brand.

Standard Bank (joint eighth) also ranked in the top 10 most admired companies with Absa (seventh) re-entering the top 10 after falling out in 2001.

In the Best Liked TV advertisements category, the most liked and memorable TV advertisements of the past year were ranked in the developed and emerging markets.

Standard Bank again excelled with two in the top 10 in the developed market category (Wealth Creation/Coins in third place and the Alan Donald/Ballet ad for one-day cricket in eighth place). Only one other advertiser, Toyota, achieved two ads in the top 10 (sixth and tenth). No financial institutions featured in the top 10 most liked ads in the emerging market category.
