Banking leadership programme launched

Standard Bank and the W K Kellogg Foundation have launched a banking leadership development programme at the University of the Witwatersrand.

The programme is managed on behalf of the W K Kellogg Foundation by LTR Ltd, a London-based consultancy company.

"Banking Group" programme is currently been offered to business students at the University of the Witwatersrand's Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management. It is focused on the early integration of highly qualified students into the banking industry before their final graduation.

The programme gives students the opportunity to:

  • acquire practical financing and banking knowledge;
  • improve their career opportunities within the South African financial industry;
  • accelerate their career development path; and
  • create a network of former "Banking Group" members, who will be part of a future leadership community of highly motivated financial specialists.
Funded by the W K Kellogg Foundation, which supports leadership development in the SADEC region, this initiative is aimed at developing bankers and financial services experts who possess entrepreneurial spirit, networking skills and the intellectual capacity and skills to drive economic development and business innovation.

The students will acquire practical knowledge through hands-on participation in projects at the Standard Bank. This is to enable students to decide early on whether they want to pursue a career in the financial services industry.

Moreover, by demonstrating their strategic thinking and managerial skills combined with relevant industry knowledge, it is anticipated that the students should improve their chances of receiving job offers from the financial industry.

Each year a group of between 50-100 business students at the University of the Witwatersrand will be identified to take part in the programme. To qualify for the "Banking Group" programme each student must have passed an extra curricular course, for which students who are at least second year undergraduates can apply.
