Jazz on the Square - The Gathering of the Young Lions

Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, will come alive on Monday 16 December as celebrations get under way for the upcoming festive season.

Johannesburg Development Association (JDA) and Standard Bank, will host Jazz on the Square as a free event on Monday 16 December 2002 at the Mary Fitzgerald Square, Market Theatre Precinct, Newtown.

Fittingly titled "The Gathering of the Young Lions", the festival, organised by T.Musicman, will unite the best of South African artists. Jimmy Dludlu, Don Laka, Judith Sephuma, Suthukazi Arosi, Musa Manzini, Moses Khumalo, Ndumiso Nyovane, Prince Kupi, Kwassa-Nkemba and Basadi Women in Jazz will take to the stage.

The festival forms part of the many entertainment activities planned during the festive season offering Johannesburg citizens and tourists a safe and enjoyable experience on the Square.

The rejuvenation of the Square, and specifically the Newtown precinct is an initiative of Blue IQ in partnership with JDA. Newtown, the heart of the Johannesburg cultural scene since the eighties, is seen as the entry point for the regeneration of Johannesburg.

The completion of Mary Fitzgerald Square was celebrated on 16 December last year with a major jazz festival. This year the "Gathering of the Young Lions" is scheduled to begin at 12pm and admission is free. Food stalls and arts and crafts stalls surrounding the Square will add to the festive ambience. Joy of Jazz merchandise will on sale. If you are interested in joining the Joy of Jazz Club, all you would need to do is visit the Joy of Jazz Caravan on the Square and sign up for exclusive benefits like lifetime membership, a 10% discount on tickets purchased at the festival gates and a club CD. Members will be invited to have a drink in the club Marquee at the festival.

A "kiddies corner" will be open from early morning, and kids will be entertained with a jumping castle, amongst other activities.

Clr Amos Masondo, Mayor of Johannesburg says, "The rejuvenation of Newtown is the initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government to develop Johannesburg as a viable city to facilitate economic growth through tourism. After a successful launch with a major jazz festival in 2001, we offer you "The Gathering of the Young Lions" jazz festival on the square, in celebration of the creative artists Newtown has produced for decades. This is a great opportunity to meet and interact with the city's people as we also celebrate the Day of Reconciliation. Let us work together to regain our city and build a better life for all."

Khanyi Mlambo, Director of Group Sponsorships, Standard Bank says, "We are proud to be associated with the JDA in hosting a free concert on the Square, inviting all South Africans to share in the exciting developments that Newtown has to offer."
