Governance and management of environmental risks and impacts

As a financial institution, our environmental impacts are much lower than those of other industries. We are, however, committed to continuously improving the management of our potential and existing environmental risks and impacts through our risk management structure. More information on our risk structure is published in our 2004 annual report.

Our risks include direct (water, waste, energy and emissions) and indirect impacts (through financing activities). The main impact of indirect risks would be financial and reputational loss.

The group does not participate in project financing transactions unless the relevant project participants and beneficiaries adhere to all legislative requirements (including environmental laws) and where applicable, local and international environmental guidelines. Any major non-conformance in environmental management is reported to the group risk management committee or the group audit committee.
