Put a spring in your step and get fit for summer

We look at some of the latest gadgets and explore exercise options that will help you get your body ready for the beach.

During the cold winter months many of us have found it virtually impossible to start or maintain a fitness regime to get us in shape and ready for summer. So with swimsuit season upon us we have put together some ideas on new and fun ways to exercise and bring you the run down on the latest keep fit gadgets.

Start slowly by doing cardiovascular activity such as walking, running or cycling for half an hour to an hour, five days a week, for optimal weigh-loss. Even 45 minutes 3 times a week should put you in good shape. If you're a beginner, start with less intense exercises and work your way up to more challenging activities.

There is a whole range of different ways to exercise. Here are a few:
  • Zumba: Virgin Active offers some very interesting classes if you are not into weight training or running on the treadmill. Try one of their Latin-infused Zumba exercise classes. It is a really fantastic way to get fit and something completely different.
  • Pilates: is an exercise technique that is a complete fitness method that has taken the world by storm in recent years. When performed regularly, it positively transforms your body. It combines awareness of the spine, proper breathing and strength and flexible training. Be sure to go to a qualified Pilates instructor or studio you can find them at www.pilatesinfo.co.za.
  • Tae Bo: is a workout for the body, mind and spirit and combines martial arts, dance, aerobics, boxing and several muscle-conditioning movements. You can do this on your own at home by purchasing books or training videos from selected retailers, or you can join a gym and take a Tae Bo class.
  • Surfing: is the ultimate way to stay in shape, if you are lucky enough to have the ocean nearby. It is a difficult sport to learn but once you get riding the waves you completely forget about the fact that you are actually exercising. It is however, the type of sport that you want to be a little more fit for as you are paddling against the natural pushes and pulls of the ocean and can get very tiring.
