Phones
If you were setting off to do some summer travelling in days gone by you would probably have packed your watch, camera (and rolls of film), a map book and maybe even a compass. The modern equivalent would be your cell phone, GPS and digital camera. According to technology guru Arthur Goldstuck, soon all you will need to pack is your phone (and charger!) (How ridiculous would that have sounded even 5 years ago?)

Must have summer techno gadgets
Let music play on, give me excess of it…. Shakespeare must have visualised the new iPod Shuffle.
The world’s smallest music player is one amazing device and also happens to be the world’s first talking one. The new iPod shuffle is half the size of the previous generation with 4GB of storage, stores up to 1 000 songs and lets you enjoy multiple playlists for hours and hours.
To add to this, the iPod shuffle has an exciting new feature called VoiceOver, which gives iPod shuffle a voice – with the press of a button, it tells you what song is playing and who’s performing it. It can even tell you the names of your playlists, giving you a new way to navigate your music.
Plus, if you are starting your summer fitness regime you will also ‘need’ the latest fashion tech-cessory – a stainless steel iPod shuffle clip which attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, even your backpack.

A few words of advice
Asked what advice he can offer consumers when looking to buy gadgets, Goldstuck says consumers need to avoid being first because the early adopters pay the most, experience the most teething troubles, and tend to have fewer people or places to turn for advice, accessories and repairs.
"Wait to see how the reviews turn out, how the word of mouth pans out, and what accessories or add-ons become available. The most important of all of those is word of mouth. Find out if anyone you know has bought the same thing and then get an opinion from the user's mouth. Ideally, get more than one opinion. Many a gadget that is truly foul has found one or two odd individuals who can see no wrong in it."
As for the advantages of buying gadgets online, Goldstuck says while the price of any given gadget varies wildly across a range of outlets, the best price is usually to be found online.
"It is often cheaper by as much as half if you do your research right," he says. "Make sure it's a reputable dealer (do a Google search on the store brand) and you could save substantially."
