After being exposed to a mutanic gas, Virgil Hawkins, an African-American high school student from the inner city, becomes charged with electromagnetic superpowers and takes on the guise of Static, an urban superhero. While defending his neighborhood from the forces of evil, he confronts real problems and issues faced by today's kids. As he gains confidence, he embarks on a series of adventures to discover inner meaning, journeying to Africa to learn about his cultural heritage.
