#5. Graphic Designer
You’re a visual creator with an original flavour, all that’s missing is a salary figure.
Here are top tips for breaking into the graphic design industry…
JACK OF ALL TRADES MASTER OF ONE
Graphic design is broad and has many specialties, focus your attentions on a specific niche or specialty.
Zoning and focusing your attention on a specific skillset gives you a competitive edge from others. For instance, logo design is an area that will always be in demand. Get into the communication theory behind it and the consumer behaviours. Attending hackathons or start-up events is a great way to get some valuable experience of the game.
MASTER THE SOFTWARE
Get your hands on Adobe Design Suite and familiarise yourself with it. A strong understanding of one or more of the systems on the suite is a real asset. Even if you prefer doing things old school, it wouldn’t hurt to use online systems to make digital copies or work on projects remotely.
INVEST IN THE TOOLS
Getting the right machine is half of the job. So get a machine with the right speed and space from an operating system.
LEARN HOW TO WRITE
Sure, a picture is worth a thousand words. But you know what else is >worth a thousand words? Skills in copywriting to help bring your work to life. A great designer understands that a good design is about the marriage of imagery, colours and language.
DEVELOP YOUR STYLE
Style can never be taught. Work on finding yours and differentiate yourself from other graphic designers.
BUILD AN ONLINE PORTFOLIO
Let your work do the talking for you. Put it in an online porti, share it on the socials especially LinkedIn so interested parties can go through your work, see what you’ve done and hit you up for paying gigs.
GET TO GRIPS WITH USER EXPERIENCE (UX)
Familiarise yourself with the UX world as some gigs will require you to work with web designers and app builders who will expect you to know the nitty-gritty like designing for screen and ease of use.
DON’T FORGET THE BASICS
Focus on understanding the principles of designs, the golden rules and the dos and don’ts. These can be self-taught through reading and research.
- Get your name out there, create dope work for fun and document the experience.
- Knock on doors and get a few freelance gigs.
- Hop onto the NFT wave. The space is growing and some graphic designers are taking the opportunity to make coin by designing avatars.
