Phishing – what to look out for
Impersonation is a proven tactic that spear-fishers use to attract victims into believing they are acting on an important message. They use information available on the internet and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to make the emails they send look legitimate.

Because of the level of personal information in these emails, it can be difficult to identify spear-phishing attacks. For example:
  • The email greets you by name, giving the impression that it is an official email from the organisation the attackers are pretending to be. Usually it will be directed to you and be particularly relevant to you in some way, for example from a company you commented on / complained about on Twitter. It comes from a lookalike email address. Attackers will often register a very similar email address and ID to the person they are impersonating. If you do not spot the difference, you could be tricked into sending the sensitive data the attacker is after. The display name is edited. If your email app only shows the display name and not the email address, the attacker can easily fool you. Rather access emails from your desktop, which displays both the name and email address of the sender and lowers your chances of being scammed. It comes from a free email account. A common tactic used by cyber-criminals is to send a message through a free email account such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc. In the email the sender may indicate that they’ve been locked out of their email account and need immediate help to complete an urgent task.

Never open an attachment or click on any links unless you recognise the sender and know the content is safe. Report suspected spear-phishing to your Relationship Manager or call WIonCall on 0861 001 052.
