| Be aware of email hacking |
Email hacking when fraudsters gain access to your email address and then send emails to your friends, family or business partners in an attempt to defraud them in your name.
How it works
- Fraudsters hack your email address through malware viruses
- They access your emails and contact list
- Emails are sent to your friends, family member or business partners
- Posing as you, they ask your contacts for money, provide a banking details ‘update’, and ask for payments to be made into the new account.
|
| |
How to tell if your email has been hacked
- You start noticing emails are missing
- You are not receiving emails
- You start to receive unexpected emails
- Your password has changed without you being aware
- There are unknown emails under your sent items.

| Steps to protect yourself against email hacking |
| |
Step 1: Ensure you have anti-virus software installed on your PC and laptop.
Step 2: Protect yourself by generating and saving strong passwords for websites, apps, etc.
Step 3: Enable 2 factor authentication (e.g. passwords requiring One-Time PINs) wherever possible.
Step 4: Subscribe to notifications that instantly advise you of any breaches of security on your accounts.
Remember, as your bank, we will never ask you to confirm personal or secret information like PINs or passwords via an email or over the phone, so always verify any request to amend your banking details and never amend them online.
If you suspect you may have been the victim of email hacking, or you receive any suspicious emails containing links, please contact WIonCall on 0861 001 052 or speak to your Relationship Manager. |
