Stay ‘digitally safe’ this holiday season
The end of the year brings an increase in fraudulent activity, potentially increasing your risk of being scammed. Here are some helpful tips to keep you ‘digitally safe’ these holidays.

  • Engage in safe online shopping. Before you make a purchase, Google the name of the business and verify that their website is legitimate. Be especially cautious if the price of the product seems too good to be true.
  • Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi networks. Public Wi-Fi networks are a prime target for hackers. It’s best to use secure Wi-Fi networks for making purchases or accessing your banking information.
  • Don’t reuse passwords. Reusing the same username and password across multiple websites significantly increases your chances of being hacked by fraudsters to gain access to your personal accounts and banking information.
  • Use secure passwords. Consider using a secure password manager and, whenever possible, use 2-step verification which prompts you to enter your phone number in addition to your password. Some mobile devices also offer 2-step verification in the form of fingerprint identification.
  • Update your social media privacy settings. Get into the habit of checking your social profile privacy settings once a month and Google your name to see what your profiles look like to the public.
  • SIM swop security. Fraudsters can hijack your cell phone account and obtain your One-Time Password (OTP) by performing unauthorised sim swaps at mobile operators. We recommend that you contact your mobile operator to request that sim swaps only be done in-store with face-to-face verification.
Remember: we will never ask you to confirm personal or secret information like PINs or passwords via an email or telephone call. In the interests of your security, we urge you to remain vigilant at all times.
