Painting the Township Blue: Maduwa Paint World’s R1 million Win

What started in a five-square-metre shack in Soshanguve has grown into a multi-province paint and coatings manufacturer – and now the winner of the 2026 Standard Bank Kasi SME National Pitch Challenge.

Maduwa Paint World (Pty) Ltd, founded by Gauteng entrepreneur Rodney Maduwa, took the R1 million grand prize after competing against some of South Africa’s most promising township businesses. The company stood out for its commercial potential, manufacturing ambitions and ability to translate business growth into broader economic impact.

For Maduwa, the win represents more than recognition. The prize money creates an opportunity to accelerate plans to expand manufacturing capacity, create additional jobs and strengthen the company’s participation in local and national value chains. A key part of its longer-term ambition is to establish a local acrylic emulsion manufacturing facility, reducing its reliance on imported raw materials and building greater local manufacturing capability.

Building competitive businesses from the kasi

Maduwa Paint World’s journey reflects the bigger ambition behind this year’s Kasi SME Summit theme: Commercialising Kasi: Unlocking Competitive Township Businesses. Township entrepreneurs are increasingly building businesses capable of moving beyond their immediate communities, entering new markets, creating jobs and participating more meaningfully in established supply chains.

This year marked the second time that the Pitch Challenge was delivered as a national competition.
. Entrepreneurs from all nine provinces competed through provincial rounds before the strongest businesses progressed to the national final.

Finalists were assessed on factors including entrepreneurial excellence, commercial viability, scalability, market opportunity, financial sustainability and community impact.

The competition also created another route to the national stage through the Viewers’ Choice, giving South Africans the opportunity to back an entrepreneur they believed deserved one final chance. North West’s Sisanda Potye of Ezempilo Primecare Clinic earned that place and ultimately finished as first runner-up, while Phumulile Mkhonza of PSD Scent Perfumes, representing Mpumalanga, was named second runner-up.

Naledzani Mosomane, Head of Enterprise and Supplier Development at Business and Commercial Banking, Standard Bank South Africa, says this year's Pitch Challenge highlighted the significant entrepreneurial potential that exists across South Africa. “The competition showcased entrepreneurs who are building sustainable and scalable businesses while addressing real challenges in their communities. Their innovation, resilience and commitment to growth are encouraging indicators of the role small businesses can play in creating jobs and supporting economic development,” she says.

Creating the conditions for growth

Now in its fourth year, the Standard Bank Kasi SME Summit brings entrepreneurs together with business leaders, development organisations, policymakers and investors to create practical opportunities for market access, collaboration and growth.

The National Pitch Challenge forms part of Standard Bank’s broader Enterprise and Supplier Development programme, which supports qualifying majority black-owned businesses through funding, mentorship, business development and access to markets.

For businesses such as Maduwa Paint World, the next challenge is turning opportunity into scale.

From a five-square-metre township operation to a national competition winner with industrial ambitions, its journey shows what can happen when entrepreneurial determination meets the right access, support and opportunity.

This is where real growth begins.
