With our extensive retail footprint, you can also access Instant Money at Spaza Shops, Spar, PEP, Pick n Pay and Shoprite stores nationwide.

How Instant Money works

  • Register for Instant Money by dialling *120*212#, enter your ID number and create a unique Instant Money Wallet PIN.
  • Access your Instant Money Wallet through Internet Banking, Cellphone Banking, on the app or at our ATMs and retail partners, and load money into it.
  • You can also send cash to anyone with a cellphone number in South Africa or receive money in your wallet, which can be accessed at any time.
  • When the money is sent, the recipient will get a voucher number and PIN to collect the money at our ATMs or retail partners.

To send money at a retailer, give your ID and cellphone number at the till and confirm the amount you want to send. You’ll receive a voucher number and a 4-digit PIN to share with the person who’ll collect the money.

How do I send Instant Money?

You can send Instant Money from the Banking App, Cellphone Banking (*120*2345#), Internet Banking, Standard Bank ATMs, Instant Money Wallet (*120*212#), participating retailers and/or register for Bulk Payments.

How much does it cost to send Instant Money?

Fees depend on where you initiate the transfer:

Can I send Instant Money to another country?
No, Instant Money currently only supports domestic payments within South Africa. Cross-border transfers are not available.
Where can I withdraw or use Instant Money?

You can get cash at any Standard Bank ATM or at our participating retail partners:

  • PEP stores, SPAR, Checkers, House and Home, Boxer, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Usave, OK Furniture, OTT spaza shops, Shop2Shop, Flash, Kazang, R&A Cellular, and A2Pay.

Please note that some ATMs may not dispense R10 or R20 notes. If this happens, please redeem your cash inside one of the participating retail stores instead.
 

How do I withdraw Instant Money as cash?
It's a simple process:
1.    Visit a Standard Bank ATM or participating retailer
2.    Select the ‘Withdraw money’ or ‘Instant Money’ option
3.    Enter the 10-digit voucher number you received via SMS
4.    Enter the 4-digit PIN for the voucher and collect the cash
What is the withdrawal limit?

You can withdraw up to R5 000 per day (this depends on available cash and note denominations at the ATM or Retailer) and a total of R25 000 per month.

Can foreign nationals receive Instant Money?

Yes, anyone with a valid South African cellphone number can receive Instant Money.

How long is the Instant Money voucher valid for?

Vouchers are valid for 3 years from the date they are issued. The PIN does not expire if the voucher is active.

How many digits are the voucher numbers & PIN?
A voucher number has 10 digits, and the collection PIN has 4 digits.
Where can I safely store my Instant Money voucher details?
You can securely store your vouchers within an Instant Money Wallet by dialling *120*212# or using the Instant Money Wallet App.
My recipient didn’t get their Instant Money voucher. What should I do?

You can easily resend the notification:

  • Use the self-help option on Cellphone Banking  (*120*212#) and select option 2 to resend the voucher SMS
  • Call the Instant Money contact centre at 0860 466 639
  • If you sent it from a SPAR store, you can return to the store with your ID, and they can resend the last active voucher
     
What do I do if my voucher or PIN is blocked?
You can reset the PIN using the original sending channel (e.g., your Banking App or Online Banking). Alternatively, contact the Instant Money team on 0860 466 639 for assistance.
Can I change a cellphone number after creating a voucher?
  • Unfortunately, retailers cannot change a recipient's number once a voucher has been issued. The required process involves cancelling the original voucher (the fee will be forfeited) and processing a new transaction using the accurate contact information.
  • Only vouchers sent from a retail store can have the sender's contact number changed by calling the contact centre on 0860 466 639 and verifying your security details.
Can I change a voucher PIN?

Yes, you can reset a voucher PIN before it is used. You can do this yourself within the sending channel (App, Online Banking, Cellphone Banking) or by calling the Instant Money team on 0860 466 639.

Important PIN rules: PINs cannot start with zero (e.g., 0123), be a sequence (e.g., 1234), or repeat numbers consecutively (e.g., 1122).*

How do I reverse an Instant Money transfer?
You can cancel the voucher through the same channel you used to send it:
  • Standard Bank digital channels: Cancel it under ‘Manage vouchers’ in the App, Online Banking, or Cellphone Banking.
  • SPAR: Return to the store with your ID and the original transaction slip to cancel the transaction. If you lost the slip, call 0860 466 639 to get the reference number.
Please note that the initial sending fee is non-refundable for all cancellations.
You will need the 4-digit collection PIN to cancel the voucher. Only vouchers with full value remaining can be cancelled.
If an ATM failed to dispense the cash, what do I do?
Please contact the Instant Money call centre immediately on 0860 466 639 to investigate the transaction.
If the retailer is unable to assist me with the redemption, what must I do?

What is Instant Money Wallet?
The Instant Money Wallet is a secure facility that allows you to redeem, store, and manage your vouchers all in one place. It also offers convenient value-added services like buying airtime and data.
Where can I safely store my Instant Money voucher details?
You can securely store your vouchers within an Instant Money Wallet by  registering on Cellphone Banking (*120*212#) or downloading the Instant Money Wallet App.

What are the maximum limits for my wallet?
You can load up to R25 000 per month in total value into your wallet. For daily usage (sending and spending), the limit is R10 000 per day or up to R25 000 per month (whichever limit is reached first).
Can I open a wallet for my children?
No, you can’t open a wallet on behalf of someone else. Anyone over the age of 16 with a valid South African ID document/Smart ID Card and a valid cellphone number can register for the wallet facility themselves.
What are the costs for using my Instant Money Wallet?

There are no monthly fees or registration fees for the wallet facility. Transaction fees are as follows:

How do I register for Instant Money Wallet?

It only takes a few quick steps using Cellphone Banking:

1.    Dial *120*212#
2.    Enter your ID number
3.    Verify your surname, second name, and first name as prompted
4.    Create and confirm your 5-digit wallet PIN
5.    You will receive a confirmation message that you are successfully registered

How can I change my Instant Money Wallet PIN?

Dial *120*212# and follow these steps:

  • Enter your current PIN number to sign in
  • Select ‘Manage Wallet’ (Option 6)
  • Select ‘Change Wallet PIN’ (Option 1)
  • Enter your new Instant Money Wallet PIN and re-enter it to confirm

Please note that if you are blocked from your account or can’t remember your PIN, you must contact the Instant Money contact centre on 0860 466 639 for assistance.

What happens to my Instant Money Wallet if my cellphone is lost or stolen or if my number changes?
Contact the Instant Money team on 0860 466 639 immediately to update your profile to your new cellphone number. The funds stored in your wallet will still be available after a SIM swap or number change once updated by the call centre.
How do I make a deposit into my Instant Money Wallet?
You can deposit funds by redeeming existing Instant Money vouchers you have received into your wallet using the voucher number and PIN.
How do I redeem a voucher in my Instant Money Wallet?
1.    Sign into your Instant Money Wallet
2.    Select ‘Manage voucher’
3.    Click on ‘Top up with Instant Money voucher’
4.    Select the voucher you wish to redeem and enter its specific PIN
How do I send money from my Instant Money Wallet?

You can send money to anyone with a South African cellphone number by creating an Instant Money voucher within the Wallet.

Sign into the Instant Money Wallet, or:
1.    Dial *120*212#
2.    Select ‘Send money’ and enter the amount
3.    Enter the recipient’s cellphone number
4.    You will be prompted to create a 4-digit voucher PIN for collection
5.    An SMS with the 10-digit voucher number is sent to the recipient. You must securely provide the 4-digit PIN code to the receiver yourself

How do I send money from my Instant Money Wallet to someone who is registered for the wallet?

To transfer funds directly to another wallet holder:

  1. Dial *120*212# or sign into the Instant Money Wallet App 
  2. Select ‘Send Money’ on the Instant Money Wallet App, or select option 4 on if you’re using Cellphone Banking
  3. Enter your recipient’s cellphone number and the amount you would like to send
  4. The funds are transferred immediately from your wallet to the other wallet holder's account
